Anthelmintic Resistance and Management of Gastrointestinal Parasites in Small Ruminants: an Update
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION The problem of anthelmintic resistance in gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) of small ruminants is world wide in distribution. In the past 20 years no new classes of anthelmintics have been developed for use in animals. Anthelmintic resistance has been documented to all classes of anthelmntics and multi-class resistance exists in many flocks. The challenge to veterinarians and producers is to utilize known and emerging technologies to control exposure to infection and reduce the use of anthelmintics to control GIN. The demonstration of anthelmintic resistance, the ecology of GIN, management to minimize pathological parasiste burdens and emerging technologies will be discussed.

INTRODUCTION Anthelmintic resistance is defined as “a greater frequency of individuals within a population able to tolerate doses of a compound than in the normal population of the same species.” 1 Anthelmintic resistance of gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes, particularly Haemonchus contortus, to commonly used anthelmintics has become a significant problem in small ruminants (sheep and goats) in ...

Gastrointestinal parasites (worms) in sheep and goats are common in all world regions. Parasite burdens have undermined survival of producers and are a limiting factor for farm profitability. Additionally, rampant worm resistance to commercially available anthelmintics adds complexity to parasite management plans and researchers have been looking for alternative compounds with effective anthelm...

Anthelmintic resistance of parasites in small ruminants, cattle and horses is increasing worldwide as a consequence of the over usage of the currently available products. In Belgium, Cooperia oncophora is the most common cattle nematode in which resistance, especially against macrocyclic lactones, occurs. Once resistance has been diagnosed, a change to another drug with a different mode of acti...

Gastrointestinal nematode infections pose a major threat to small ruminant production. is a helminth parasite that feeds on blood of small ruminant animals and causes anaemia, anorexia, loss of condition, and eventual death of the host animal. The parasite is particularly found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide [1]. In Nigeria and most developing countries, parasitic helminths cause...
